For days when you need to be on the move, a typical bra just won’t do – you need a sturdy and comfortable sports bra.

A good sports bra is designed to provide adequate comfort and support. It has seamless cups and cushioned fastenings, and made with material that wicks off moisture from your skin. Wide, non-stretch straps, and a racer back cut are also ideal. The less stretchy your sports bra is, the better. Multi-hook fastenings are also good.

 

Although sports bras are generally meant for when you’re extra-active, there are certain types of sports bras that are made especially for the kind of activity you’re doing.

Low Impact Activities do not require a lot of movement, and are not too fast or vigorous. These activities don’t tire you out easily, but you still need to rein your breasts in and get adequate support so they don’t bounce too much. Low impact activities include walking, weight training, road cycling, rock climbing, and yoga.

Medium Impact Activities require a moderate amount of movement. They can be tiring, especially if done over a long period of time. Examples of medium impact activities are spinning, skiing, in-line skating, stair climbing, brisk walking, tennis/racquetball, and golf.

Lastly, High Impact Activities are activities that require fast and vigorous movement. Most cardiovascular and weight-loss activities fall under this category. High impact activities include running, mountain biking, step/high-impact aerobics, softball, soccer, horseback riding and basketball.

 

To determine your band size, wrap the tape measure directly under your bust as snugly as possible. If the result is an even number, add 4 inches; if it’s an odd number, add 5 inches.

 

For your cup size, measure the fullest part of your bust (while wearing a non-padded bra), making sure that the tape measure is parallel to the ground, not the binding. Make sure the tape measure is just touching the fullest part of your breasts, not binding. Round off the result to the nearest whole number.

Subtract your band size measurement from this second measurement; the difference is your cup size. Refer to the chart below:

Example:

Band size - 36 (original measurement: 32 inches + 4 since it’s an even number)
Cup size – 40
40 – 36 = 4 (refer to chart – since the difference is 4, your cup size is D)

Therefore, your bra size is 36D.
